By Gabriela Rudolph, Jmac Associate Account Executive
It has been one year since I graduated from college and entered into my first post-grad role in public relations. It’s strange how fast time flies, but I’m proud of the growth I’ve achieved in my career so far, going from an intern to an Associate Account Executive and now managing accounts. As I reflect on the year, I realize that there are some contrasts between expectations I had about a career in PR and the realities of working in the field.
Expectation: It’s easy to land a job after college
Reality: While I’m grateful to have secured a role in public relations shortly after graduation, I have become acutely aware that the job search journey hasn’t been smooth sailing for many of my peers. The job market is fiercely competitive, with many new graduates grappling to get their foot in the door. Despite the prevailing narrative of seamless transitions from graduation to a full-time job, the reality entails facing numerous rejections, enduring lengthy interview processes, and experiencing the frustration of being ghosted by recruiters.
Expectation: Your education ends after college
Reality: Public relations is a field that is constantly evolving. To be successful in PR requires a commitment to lifelong learning and dedication to staying on top of industry trends. While formal education may lay the groundwork for a career in PR, the reality is that PR professionals must continually invest in professional development, adapt to emerging trends, and embrace new technologies to stay relevant.
Expectation: PR is flashy and glamorous
Reality: Many believe that PR is all about glitz and glamor – champagne dinners, flashy PR stunts, and high-profile events. However, the reality couldn’t be further from the truth. PR is about building trust, fostering relationships, and securing consistent, quality coverage for clients. In certain areas, there is the opportunity when glamorous events may occur, but they represent only a small fraction of the day-to-day responsibilities of PR professionals.
Expectation: Everyone in PR is outgoing and bubbly
Reality: In a profession predicated on effective communication and interpersonal connections, it’s easy to assume that everyone in PR is an outgoing extrovert with a bubbly personality. Within public relations, individuals hail from a diverse array of backgrounds and possess varying personality traits. While some may be outgoing and bubbly, others may have a quieter demeanor or a more analytical mindset. This diversity of personalities enriches the field, fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment where different strengths and perspectives come together to drive success.
Expectation: You need to be a social media expert or influencer
Reality: While a foundational understanding of social media certainly holds value in PR, it’s far from the sole determinant of success. Effective PR encompasses a multifaceted skill set, spanning everything from strategic planning and crisis management to compelling storytelling and media relations. While proficiency in social media may open doors, success in PR hinges on a comprehensive understanding of the media landscape, adept communication skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to adapt to ever-changing trends and technologies.
Although a career in public relations isn’t what I 100% expected, embracing its challenges and opportunities has been a rewarding journey. As I continue in my career, I look forward to further growth, learning, and exploration within the field of PR. My biggest piece of advice for those looking to jump into a career in PR is to be open-minded and willing to learn. There’s a lot about PR that they don’t teach you in textbooks. Real-world experiences and hands-on practice will be your best teachers, and staying adaptable and curious will help you be successful.
